Poem

Night Sounds

One night when I was safe in bed,
I counted many sheep,
But any means which I employed
Would not bring dreams or sleep.

I listened to the chirping sounds
Nocturnal insects make.
The horns of many cars I heard
As I lay there awake.

Although the household was in bed,
I heard from walls and floors
Those chirping sounds one hears at night,
All mingled with the snores.

From far-off hills I plainly heard
An engine's whistle blow;
And just when sleep was closing in,
I heard the rooster crow.
