George Stephen Stapleton
Poem

She Fades In the Truth of the Rising Sun

           why
where upon my chasm-ridden heart
      dwells my love’s ghost

images wisp across my slumbering mind
like a faint cloud in the morning sky
that fades in the truth of the rising sun

leaves instead me waking
      arms in an empty ring
asking why
         why
where dwelt my love last night?
when she did not wish to dream with me

unspoken words of her affection
         that will never be spoken
      tears that should be falling
my eyes alas remain dry but aching

to see her once again.
