I am climbing the mountain, Parnassus,
But I'm far below the summit,
And I realize that caution must reign,
Or, from the mount, I could plummet.
That all may know what the mount is about,
There is only one way for me to climb.
Others may seek a deep, hidden valley,
But I seek the pinnacle of clarity and rhyme.
I cannot succumb to the dark and twisted;
That which would strangle with sinister tentacle.
It must be clear, and to all, understandable,
If I am to reach the sunlit pinnacle.
Then--as I climb, may I always endeavor;
To lovers of poems, may I ever send
My thoughts of love and human kindness
Borne from the mount on a gentle wind.
