While trudging up the hill one day
Bill stopped to pass the time of day
With neighbor George, who'd dug a pit
And now was throwing dirt in it.
Why are you filling up that hole?
Said Bill, Why, bless my soul
That lovely hole is what I need
I'll buy it from you, yes indeed!
I'll take it home, that's what I'll do,
And make some post holes, quite a few!
Give me some time, I'll get my truck;
I'll get it loaded, with some luck.!
What will it cost me? Name your price,
I'll bring a check back in a trice.
And so the hole was sold to Bill,
He drove off with it, up the hill.
The tie-downs loosened near the top
And Bill came to a sudden stop!
But just too late! The hole slipped free,
Fell to the road, as Bill could see.
Then he just panicked, got the shakes,
Forgot to lock his parking brakes:
The truck rolled back into the hole
And disappeared, 'twas swallowed whole.
The city crews just filled the pit.
Alas! There was no saving it!
So now poor Bill has lost his truck,
And hole as well, he's out of luck.
Bill lost his money, sad to tell,
And now HE's in the hole as well!
